Convertibles are fun, but when it comes to cars, there’s only one category that seems to steal my heart: foreign cars. I’m talking about BMW, Lexus, Audi, Porsche, and Maserati. Yes, I have expensive taste but if you’re a real car fan, you’ll hear me out.
I have to cover the Z3 first because it really is such an amazing car — once you check out the specs, you’ll see exactly what I mean. So let’s go over them from the top, shall we? OK!
The Z3 is a roadster that was discontinued but it is still incredibly hot. If you see pictures of it online, you’ll realize what a smooth ride this really is.
It’s got some shortcomings. For starters, there’s some plastic materials used in the interior. If you’re really trying to make it look like you’ve got big money, the Z3 isn’t quite where you need to go. Still, for us working folks, it was a chance to own something that felt smooth, rode smooth, and looked smooth. I could forgive a few points here and there as long as the ride was fantastic.
When it comes to the convertible version, it’s fast — you’re talking 0-60mph in about 9 seconds. No, it’s not as fast as some hardcore sports cars, but who cares about that?
Some models went up to 231 hp — that’s a lot of horsepower in such a small package. Suspension could have been better, but the price dictated that a few compromises would be made.
If you’re looking for a good way to get into the convertible market without spending an arm and a leg, the Z3 is definitely your bet. You can find a lot of used Z3’s online, where you can actually get them in pretty good shape. BMW owners tend to still take very good care of their cards so that the resale value is kept as high as possible. If you’re going into this brand for the first time, you might be surprised at how good the Z3 really is. However, this is just another part of the fun of owning foreign vehicles.
The craftsmanship of the Z3 is something that I could talk about forever, but you really need to see if you can drive one. The convertible style might not be for everyone. If you go to the dealership and look at a few used models and think that it’s awful, switch over to the coupe — it’s a little more spacious and the riding is also better.
No matter which type of Z3 you choose, you’re going to have a great time — period!
